Qualification code: 72176In order to enhance one’s career in banking and risk management, it is necessary to understand the fundamental concepts and principles of these disciplines. The purpose of the short course is to provide individuals interested in banking and/or risk management with a fundamental knowledge of banking and risk management disciplines.

Code  Module 1CCBF01-5   Fundamentals of banking
  • The module covers the following: the banking environment; the intermediation within the South African financial system; the importance of the financial service sector; the code of banking practice; characteristics of the banker-client relationship; and customer needs and requirements within a banking environment.
Code  Module 2CCBF02-6   Fundamentals of risk management
  • The module covers the following: typical risks in a financial environment; legislation and regulatory requirements; operational risk in a banking environment; and risk management process.
Evaluation and examinationStudents will be assessed by means of two assignments per module completed during the semester.
A formal two-hour  examination
The examination will be done via a written two-hour examination for each module. There will be a sub-minimum of 40% to pass the examination for each module. An overall mark of 75% constitutes a distinction.
CertificateOn successful completion of the modules students will be awarded a certificate by the University at an official certificate ceremony.

Teaching methodThe Unisa open and distance learning paradigm will be followed. Students will receive learning material written in outcomes based format, covering the abovementioned topics. Learning material consists of prescribed text books (to be acquired by students) and a study guide supplemented by tutorial letters (supplied by Unisa).
Registration commencement date and feesThe individual commencement and registration dates are as follows:
  • First intake:  22 January (registration takes place from 1 December until 22 January)
  • Second intake: 16 July (registration takes place from 21 June until 16 July)
FeesThe fee is R1200.00 per module, which includes tutorial matter, tuition and examination fees. Fees are payable in full upon registration.
Prescribed textbooks are not included in the course fees and are roughly R500.00 in total.
